In 1888, Samuel Howell Franklin—born in Pamplin, Appomattox County—established “Franklin, Schenk and Co.” in downtown Lynchburg. His vision was ambitious yet timeless: to bring world-class menswear to the gentlemen of Virginia, combined with the kind of personalized service that makes every customer feel valued.
Through partnerships and growth in the 1890s, the business evolved—first as Franklin & Flood, then in collaboration with Lilleous H. Gilliam—before settling at its iconic Main Street location. By 1897, S.H. Franklin had become a premier destination for high-end fashion and business attire, a reputation it would carry for nearly a century.

For forty years, the S.H. Franklin name rested—but the legacy of quality and craftsmanship it represented never faded from Virginia menswear. In 2026, we've taken up that mantle once more at Stonefield.
Inspired by Samuel Howell Franklin's original vision, our Stonefield shop brings exceptional menswear, custom tailoring, and personal service to Charlottesville professionals, weddings, alumni weekends, and clients heading to UVA events. Same commitment. Same standards. A new era.

R. Coffee Ltd was founded by Rick Coffee, whose journey in menswear began in Lynchburg, VA at S.H. Franklin. It was there that Rick discovered his passion for clothing and his talent for designing wardrobes that help others look and feel their best.
That passion grew into a lifelong calling, leading to the creation of R. Coffee Ltd in Lynchburg. Today, James proudly owns and operates R. Coffee Ltd (Lynchburg), Davidsons (Roanoke), and the newly reimagined S.H. Franklin in Charlottesville—bringing the vision, experience, legacy, and love for timeless style full circle in a setting that feels local to Stonefield, UVA, and the wider community.
